Chaining

Definition

Chaining is a behavioral psychology term that refers to the process of linking together individual behaviors into a sequence or chain. Each behavior in the chain serves as both an end result of the previous behavior and the cue for the next one.

Analogy

Think about how you make a sandwich. You first take out bread, then spread mayo, add lettuce, put on some cheese, and finally place another slice of bread on top. Each step is dependent on completing the previous one - you can't put cheese without having spread mayo first. This sequential process is similar to chaining in psychology.
