Pendulum

Definition

A pendulum is a weight suspended from a fixed point that swings back and forth under the influence of gravity. Its motion follows simple harmonic motion if its amplitude is small.

Analogy

Picture yourself swinging on a playground swingset. Just like how you move back and forth, a pendulum swings in a similar manner due to the force of gravity pulling it back towards its equilibrium position.

Related terms

Period: The time it takes for a pendulum to complete one full swing or oscillation.

Amplitude: The maximum displacement from the equilibrium position in a pendulum's motion.

Length: The distance between the pivot point and the center of mass of a pendulum, which affects its period.
