Free-Body Diagrams

Definition

Free-body diagrams are visual representations that show all the forces acting on an object. They help us analyze and understand the motion of objects by isolating the forces acting on them.

Analogy

Imagine you're playing a video game where you control a character. The free-body diagram is like the HUD (heads-up display) that shows all the power-ups, obstacles, and enemies affecting your character. It helps you strategize and make decisions based on the forces at play.

Related terms

Newton's Laws: These laws describe how forces affect the motion of objects.

Normal Force: The force exerted by a surface to support an object resting on it.

Tension Force: The force transmitted through a string, rope, or cable when it is pulled tight.
