Chemical energy refers to the potential energy stored in the bonds of molecules. It is released or absorbed during chemical reactions.
Think of chemical energy like a loaded spring. Just as a compressed spring has potential energy that can be released when it is allowed to expand, chemicals store potential energy that can be released through reactions.
Potential Energy: The stored energy an object possesses due to its position or state.
Exothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction that releases heat and/or light.
Endothermic Reaction: A chemical reaction that absorbs heat from its surroundings.
