Vox = Vocos(θ)

Definition

The equation Vox = Vocos(θ) calculates the horizontal component of the initial velocity in projectile motion. It determines how fast an object is initially moving horizontally based on its total initial velocity and launch angle.

Analogy

Think of throwing a ball at an angle into the air. The speed at which it travels horizontally depends on how hard you throw it and at what angle.

Related terms

Initial Velocity (Vo): The total velocity of an object at the beginning of its motion, including both magnitude and direction.

Cosine Function (cos(θ)): A mathematical function that relates angles to ratios between sides of right triangles.

Launch Angle (θ): The angle between the initial path of a projectile and a reference line, usually measured from the horizontal.
