Transverse Waves

Definition

Waves in which particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. In these waves, crests and troughs are formed as particles move up and down or side to side.

Analogy

Picture yourself holding onto one end of a jump rope while your friend holds onto the other end. As you move your hand up and down, transverse waves travel along the rope from one end to another.
