Period of Oscillation

Definition

The time taken for one complete cycle or oscillation.

Analogy

Consider a pendulum clock ticking back and forth. Each tick-tock represents one complete cycle or period. Just like the pendulum, other objects also have their own periods of oscillation.

Related terms

Frequency: The reciprocal value of the period, representing the number of cycles per unit time.

Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM): A type of periodic motion where the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement from equilibrium.

Resonance: When an external force matches the natural frequency of an oscillating system, causing increased amplitude and energy transfer.
