Definition

A best-fit line is a straight line that represents the trend or relationship between two variables in a scatter plot. It is determined by minimizing the overall distance between the line and all the data points.

Analogy

Imagine you have a bunch of scattered puzzle pieces on a table, and you want to draw a straight line that goes through as many pieces as possible. The best-fit line is like drawing that line in such a way that it comes closest to most of the puzzle pieces.
