Secondary Leading Tone Chords

Definition

Secondary leading tone chords are chords that function as temporary dominant chords in a key other than the tonic. They are built on the leading tone of a different key and create tension that resolves to a chord within that key.

Dominant Function: A chord or harmony that creates tension and leads to resolution. It is often associated with the V or vii°7 chord in major keys.

Modulation: The process of changing from one key to another within a piece of music.

Pivot Chord: A chord that is common to both the original key and the new key during modulation. It helps smooth the transition between keys.
