Ritenuto

Definition

Ritenuto means to immediately slow down the tempo of a piece. Unlike ritardando, which has a gradual decrease in speed, ritenuto indicates an abrupt change in tempo.

Analogy

Picture yourself walking briskly and suddenly coming across an unexpected obstacle. You immediately stop in your tracks before continuing at a slower pace. This sudden change in speed is similar to how ritenuto functions in music.
