Relative keys

Definition

Relative keys are pairs of major and minor keys that share the same key signature. They have a close relationship and evoke similar emotions, but differ in tonality (major or minor).

Related terms

Parallel keys: Two keys that share the same tonic note but have different modes (major or minor).

Key signature: The sharps or flats placed at the beginning of a staff to indicate the key of a piece.

Modulation: The process of changing from one key to another within a piece of music.
