Modes

Definition

Modes are scales derived from major and minor scales by starting on different scale degrees. Each mode has its own unique pattern of whole steps and half steps.

Analogy

Imagine modes as different flavors of ice cream. Just like how vanilla ice cream can be transformed into chocolate chip or strawberry by adding different ingredients, major and minor scales can be transformed into modes by starting on different notes.
