Interval Size and Quality

Definition

Interval size refers to the distance between two pitches, measured in terms of steps or half steps. Interval quality describes the specific sound of an interval, whether it is major, minor, perfect, augmented, or diminished.

Analogy

Think of interval size as measuring the physical distance between two cities on a map - you can count how many miles or kilometers apart they are. Interval quality is like describing the weather conditions during your journey - it tells you if it's sunny (major), cloudy (minor), stormy (augmented/diminished), or just right (perfect).
