Harmonic Functions

Definition

Harmonic functions refer to the roles that chords play within a key. Each chord has its own function, such as establishing stability (tonic), creating tension (dominant), or providing contrast (subdominant).

Analogy

Imagine harmonic functions as members of a sports team. The tonic is like the captain who leads and provides stability, while the dominant is like an aggressive striker who creates tension and excitement. The subdominant acts as the versatile midfielder who adds variety and contrast to the game.
