Definition

A common tone refers to a note that is shared between two different chords. It remains the same while other notes change.

Analogy

Think of a common friend you have with someone else. Even though you both have different groups of friends, there is one person who is in both of your circles. That person acts as the common connection or "common tone" between your two groups.
