Anticipations

Definition

Anticipations are non-chord tones that occur before a chord change and resolve by step to a note within the next chord.

Think of anticipations as someone eagerly waiting for their favorite song to start playing, and they start dancing just before the music begins.

Escape Tones: Non-chord tones that occur on a strong beat and resolve by step in the opposite direction.

Appoggiaturas: Non-chord tones that occur on a strong beat and resolve by leap or skip to a consonant note.

Pedal Points: Sustained or repeated notes, usually in the bass, while harmonies change above it.
