Definition

A theocracy is a form of government where religious leaders hold the highest power, and religious law is used to govern the country. In a theocracy, there is no separation between religion and state.

Analogy

Imagine a school where all decisions are made by the principal who also happens to be the head of a religious group. The principal uses their religious beliefs to create rules for everyone in the school, and these rules must be followed by all students and staff members.

Iran: Iran is often cited as an example of a modern-day theocracy. Religious leaders have significant political influence, and Islamic law plays a central role in governing the country.

Vatican City: Vatican City, while technically an absolute monarchy, can also be considered as having elements of a theocracy since it is governed by the Pope who holds both spiritual and temporal authority.

Saudi Arabia: Although Saudi Arabia has elements of monarchy, it also operates under strict Islamic law with strong influence from religious leaders. It can be seen as having characteristics of a theocratic system.
