An oligarchy is a form of power structure where power effectively rests with a small number of people. These people could be distinguished by royalty, wealth, education, or corporate, religious or military control.
Imagine being on a sports team where only the captain and co-captains make all the decisions about how you play the game. They decide everything from strategy to who gets to play and when. That's what an oligarchy is like!
Plutocracy: This is government by the wealthy – it’s like an oligarchy but specifically for rich people.
Aristocracy: This refers to a form of government that places strength in the hands of a small, privileged ruling class - it's like an old-school version of an oligarchy.
Elitism: The belief or attitude that individuals who form an elite are likely to be more productive and valuable than others - it's essentially the mindset behind any oligarchic system.
