Independence refers to the state of being self-governing, free from external control or influence, and having the ability to make decisions and govern one's own affairs without interference from other nations.
Imagine you are an adult who has moved out of your parents' house and started living on your own. You have the freedom to make your own choices about what you eat, how you spend your money, and how you organize your life. Similarly, when a nation achieves independence, it gains autonomy and can determine its own destiny without relying on outside powers.
Colonialism: The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country by establishing settlements or exploiting its resources.
Decolonization: The process through which colonies gain independence from colonial powers.
Sovereignty: The supreme power or authority of a state to govern itself independently within its territorial boundaries without interference from external forces.
