The EPI ranks countries' performance on high-priority environmental issues in two areas - protection of human health from environmental harm and protection of ecosystems.
The EPI is like a health check-up for the planet. Just as doctors measure things like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc., to assess your overall health, the EPI measures various factors to determine the health of our environment.
Sustainability: A method of harvesting or using a resource so that it's not depleted or permanently damaged.
Ecological Footprint: A measure of human demand on Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate.
Biodiversity: The variety and variability of life on Earth. It typically measures variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem level.
