Definition

The birth rate is the number of live births per 1,000 people in a population in a year.

Analogy

Think of the birth rate as the speedometer on your car. It tells you how fast (or slow) your population is growing due to births at any given moment.

Related terms

Infant Mortality Rate: This refers to the number of deaths of infants under one year old per 1,000 live births in a year.

Crude Birth Rate (CBR): This is another term for birth rate, but it specifically refers to the total number of live births per 1,000 people regardless of age or sex.

Natural Increase Rate (NIR): This is the difference between the number of live births and deaths during a year, divided by mid-year population and multiplied by 1,000.
