Definition

The right to petition government is a First Amendment right that allows citizens to make requests or demands of their government without fear of punishment or retaliation.

Analogy

Imagine you're at a restaurant and your order comes out wrong. You'd naturally ask the waiter/waitress for a correction. Similarly, if you see something wrong with how your country is being run, you can "send back" your complaints through petitions asking for changes.
