Merit-based principles refer to the idea that individuals should be chosen for jobs, promotions, scholarships etc., based on their abilities and qualifications rather than factors such as favoritism, nepotism or discrimination.
Think of merit-based principles like a school's varsity sports team. The coach doesn't pick players because they're his friends or family members. Instead, he chooses those who have proven their skills and abilities in the sport.
Competence: This refers to an individual's ability to perform a job or task effectively due to possessing the necessary skills and knowledge.
Equal Opportunity: A principle that emphasizes providing everyone with the same chances to succeed without any bias or discrimination.
Affirmative Action: A policy designed to increase opportunities for historically disadvantaged groups by considering factors like race and gender in hiring or admissions decisions.
