Definition

Accountability refers to individuals, organizations, or governments being held responsible for their actions and decisions.

Analogy

Consider it like getting graded for your homework; if you do well, you get a good grade (positive accountability). If you don't, your grades drop (negative accountability).

Related terms

Checks and Balances: A system that allows each branch of government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power.

Transparency: The idea that an institution's actions should be open to public scrutiny.
