White Terror
Definition
The White Terror refers to a period of political violence and repression in France that occurred from 1794-1795, following the end of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. It was characterized by mass arrests, executions, and violent attacks against perceived enemies of the state.
Analogy
Think about it like a pendulum swinging back after being pushed too far in one direction. After the extreme violence and chaos of the Reign of Terror (the push), there was an equally strong reaction in the opposite direction (the swing back) - this is what we call the White Terror.
