U-boats were military submarines operated by Germany, particularly in World War I and II. They were used primarily for blockade running and sinking enemy ships.

Blockade Running: An attempt to get through a blockade set up by an enemy to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving certain areas.
Torpedo: A self-propelled weapon with an explosive warhead, launched above or below the water surface, propelled underwater towards a target, designed to detonate either on contact with its target or proximity to it.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare: A type of naval warfare in which submarines sink vessels such as freighters and tankers without warning, as opposed to attacks per prize rules.
