The Soviet Union was a federal socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. It was a one-party state governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital in its largest republic, Russian SFSR.
Imagine if your school were run entirely by student council without any teachers or administrators. They make all decisions about rules, curriculum, etc., but not everyone agrees with them. That's kind-of like how things worked under Soviet Union governance - one party made all decisions for everyone else.
Communism: A political theory derived from Karl Marx advocating class war leading to society where property is publicly owned and each person works according to their abilities and needs.
Cold War: A period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union and the United States and their respective allies, the Eastern Bloc and the Western Bloc, after World War II.
Joseph Stalin: A Georgian revolutionary and Soviet politician who led the Soviet Union from mid-1920s until 1953 as General Secretary of Communist Party and Premier.
