Italy

Definition

Italy, in the context of AP European History, refers to a country located in Southern Europe that became a unified nation-state in 1861. Prior to this, it was a collection of independent city-states and kingdoms.

Analogy

Think of Italy as a puzzle. Before 1861, all the pieces (city-states and kingdoms) were separate with their own identities. But after unification under Victor Emmanuel II, these pieces came together to form one complete picture - modern Italy.
