Dams

Definition

Dams are structures built across rivers or streams to control the flow of water and create reservoirs. They are used for various purposes such as flood control, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and water supply.

Analogy

Think of a dam as a giant faucet handle that can be turned on or off to regulate the flow of water in a river. Just like you can control the amount of water coming out of a faucet by adjusting the handle, dams allow us to manage the flow of water in rivers.

Tidal Waves: Tidal waves, also known as tsunamis, are large ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. Unlike dams that control water flow, tidal waves are natural phenomena that can cause significant destruction along coastlines.

Reservoir: A reservoir is an artificial lake created by constructing a dam across a river or valley. It stores water for various purposes such as drinking water supply, irrigation, and recreation activities like boating and fishing.

Hydroelectric Power: Hydroelectric power refers to electricity generated from flowing or falling water. Dams play a crucial role in hydroelectric power generation by harnessing the energy from moving water to turn turbines and produce electricity.
