Algal Blooms

Definition

Algal blooms are rapid and excessive growths of algae in bodies of water, caused by an excess of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. These blooms can deplete oxygen levels in the water, leading to harmful effects on aquatic life.

Analogy

Imagine a crowded party where everyone is dancing and having fun. But suddenly, more and more people start joining the party until it becomes too crowded. The lack of space makes it difficult for everyone to move freely, just like algal blooms make it hard for aquatic organisms to survive due to low oxygen levels.

Related terms

Eutrophication: The process by which a body of water becomes enriched with nutrients, leading to excessive algal growth.

Dead zones: Areas in bodies of water where oxygen levels are extremely low or depleted due to algal blooms, causing harm or death to marine life.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs): Algal blooms that produce toxins harmful to humans and animals when ingested or exposed to them.
