Patron-clientelism refers to a political system where powerful individuals or groups provide benefits and resources to less powerful individuals or groups in exchange for loyalty, support, and political favors.

Analogy

Imagine a popular student who gives out free snacks to their classmates in exchange for them doing favors like carrying their books or helping with homework. The popular student gains loyal followers who will do anything for them.
