Checks and Balances

Definition

Checks and balances refer to mechanisms within a political system that limit each branch's powers and prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful. It ensures a system of shared powers and prevents abuses of power.

Analogy

Imagine a group project where each member has a specific role and responsibility. They have to work together, but they also keep an eye on each other to make sure no one is doing all the work or making all the decisions. This way, everyone's contributions are balanced, and no one can dominate the project.
