Standard reduction potentials refer to the tendency of a chemical species to acquire electrons and thereby be reduced. Each species has its own intrinsic reduction potential; more positive values are stronger oxidizing agents.
Consider standard reduction potentials like grades on a test. Just as higher grades indicate better performance, more positive reduction potentials indicate a stronger ability to gain electrons (be reduced).
Oxidation: The process in which an atom, ion, or molecule loses electrons.
Reduction: The process in which an atom, ion, or molecule gains electrons.
Electrochemical Cell: A device that generates electrical energy from chemical reactions or facilitates chemical reactions through the introduction of electrical energy.
