K Value

Definition

In chemistry, the K value refers to the equilibrium constant, which expresses the ratio of concentrations of products to reactants at equilibrium.

Analogy

Imagine you're playing tug-of-war. The K value would be like the point where both teams are pulling with equal force - no one's winning or losing. It's balanced!

Related terms

Equilibrium State: The state where both reactants and products are present in concentrations which have no further tendency to change with time.

Reaction Quotient (Q): The ratio of product concentrations to reactant concentrations at any point in time during a reaction.

Le Chatelier’s Principle: This principle states that if a dynamic equilibrium is disturbed by changing conditions, the system responds by re-establishing the equilibrium via counteracting changes.
