Definition

Electromagnetic waves are a type of energy that can travel through space. They consist of electric and magnetic fields oscillating perpendicular to each other, and they include radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Analogy

Imagine electromagnetic waves as different colors on a spectrum. Each color represents a different type of wave with its own unique properties and frequency.

Related terms

Radio Waves: These are low-frequency electromagnetic waves used for communication purposes such as broadcasting radio signals or transmitting television signals.

Microwaves: These are higher frequency than radio waves and are commonly used in microwave ovens for cooking food quickly.

Infrared Radiation: This is the type of electromagnetic wave that we perceive as heat. It has longer wavelengths than visible light but shorter wavelengths than microwaves.
