Corrosion is the gradual destruction or alteration of materials by chemical reactions with their environment. In metals, corrosion often appears as rusting.
Corrosion is like tooth decay for metals. Just as sugary foods can cause cavities over time if teeth aren't properly cared for, certain environmental conditions can cause metals to corrode or "rust" over time.
Oxidation: A chemical reaction that involves the moving of electrons from one atom to another. It's an essential part of corrosion.
Rust: The reddish-brown flaky coating formed on iron or steel by oxidation, especially in the presence of moisture.
Galvanization: The process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent rusting.
