Cathode

Definition

The cathode is the electrode where reduction occurs in a chemical reaction. It's the site where electrons are gained.

Analogy

If the anode is like your generous friend who always gives away their stuff, then think of the cathode as another friend who loves freebies and happily accepts them. In this scenario, these freebies represent electrons.

Related terms

Reduction: This process involves gaining electrons - just like our second friend happily accepting freebies from our generous first friend.

Battery: A device consisting of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections for powering electrical devices - essentially using what happens at both the cathodes and anodes to generate power!

Half-cell Reaction: Each half-reaction represents either reduction or oxidation happening at each electrode separately.
