Amphiprotic

Definition

An amphiprotic substance is one that can act as either an acid or base – it can either donate or accept protons depending on its environment.

Analogy

Consider yourself at different family gatherings. With your younger cousins, you might take on the role of leader (donating guidance like an acid donates protons). But with your elders, you might become the listener (accepting wisdom like a base accepts protons). You're amphiprotic - you can adapt to your environment just like an amphiprotic substance.
