Proportion

Definition

Proportion refers to a relationship between two quantities that are equal or have a constant ratio.

Analogy

Think of baking cookies. If you double all the ingredients in a recipe, maintaining their ratios, you will end up with twice as many cookies. This demonstrates proportionality - changing one quantity affects another in a consistent way.

Related terms

Ratio: A ratio compares two quantities by division and shows how many times one value contains another.

Direct Variation: Direct variation occurs when two variables change in proportion; as one increases (or decreases), so does the other.

Inverse Variation: Inverse variation happens when two variables change inversely; as one increases (or decreases), the other decreases (or increases) at a constant rate.
