Definition

In calculus, f(x) represents a function where x is the input and f(x) is the output. It shows the relationship between the input and output values of a mathematical expression.

Analogy

Think of f(x) as a vending machine. You put in an input (money), and it gives you an output (snacks). The function f(x) works similarly, taking an input value (x) and producing an output value (f(x)).
