Domain Restrictions

Definition

Domain restrictions are limitations placed on the set of input values (or independent variable) in a mathematical function. They specify which values are valid and meaningful within a given context.

Analogy

Imagine you have tickets to enter an amusement park. The domain restrictions would be like rules stating who is allowed to enter based on age, height, or other criteria. Similarly, domain restrictions in math determine which inputs are allowed for a particular function.

Related terms

Range Restrictions: Range restrictions limit the set of output values (or dependent variable) in a mathematical function.

Interval Notation: Interval notation is used to express domains and ranges by specifying intervals rather than listing individual numbers.

Piecewise Function: A piecewise function is defined differently depending on different intervals within its domain.
