Spliceosome

Definition

A spliceosome is a complex assembly of RNA and protein molecules that removes introns from pre-mRNA during splicing.

Analogy

Consider spliceosome as a film editor in a movie production. It cuts out the unnecessary scenes (introns) and stitches together the important ones (exons) to create the final, coherent movie (mature mRNA).

Related terms

snRNA (Small Nuclear RNA): A type of RNA that combines with proteins to form spliceosomes.

Pre-mRNA: The initial transcript from DNA transcription which contains both exons and introns.

Alternative Splicing: A process by which different combinations of exons are joined together to produce different mRNA molecules from the same gene, leading to diverse proteins.
