Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)

Definition

rRNA is part of ribosomes, serving as structural components and also catalyzing peptide bond formation. It's essential for protein synthesis in all living organisms.

Analogy

Consider rRNA as the factory floor where assembly of products (proteins) takes place. It provides a site where raw materials (amino acids) are brought together to create a finished product.

Related terms

Ribosome: A cell organelle composed of RNA and protein; the site of protein synthesis.

Polypeptide: A polymer of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds.

Protein Synthesis: The process by which individual cells construct proteins from their DNA instructions, involving transcription and translation.
