Respiration

Definition

Respiration is the process by which cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose and release the energy they contain.

Analogy

Consider respiration like burning fuel in an engine. Glucose is our fuel, oxygen helps burn it efficiently, and carbon dioxide plus water are our exhaust gases. But instead of driving wheels, this 'engine' drives our cells.

Related terms
