Nodes

Definition

In phylogenetics, nodes are points on a tree where a lineage splits into two or more separate lineages. They represent the most recent common ancestor of the lineages that branch from them.

Analogy

Think of nodes like intersections in a city. Each intersection (node) is the point where different streets (lineages) diverge. The intersection itself represents the place where all these streets were once connected, just as a node represents the common ancestor of different species.
