Great Dying

Definition

Also known as the "Permian–Triassic (P–Tr) extinction event", it refers to an extreme biodiversity crisis about 252 million years ago when up to 96% of all marine species and more than two-thirds of terrestrial species died out.

Analogy

Think about your school being so full one day that there are students everywhere you look. Then imagine coming back tomorrow and finding only four students left out of every hundred. That’s how drastic “The Great Dying” was!
