Enhancers

Definition

Enhancers are sequences of DNA that increase the likelihood of transcription by providing binding sites for proteins known as transcription factors.

Analogy

Think of enhancers like a motivational speaker at a conference. The speaker (enhancer) doesn't do the work themselves, but they inspire and encourage others (transcription factors) to get up and do their jobs more effectively.

Related terms

Transcription Factors: These are proteins that control the process of converting DNA into RNA. They're like the employees who get motivated by the speaker.

Promoter: This is a region of DNA where RNA polymerase binds to start transcription. It's like the stage where all action begins after being inspired by the motivational speaker.

Operon: This is a unit made up of linked genes which is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis. It's similar to an entire team in a company working together towards achieving common goals.
