Cystic Fibrosis

Definition

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. It's characterized by abnormal transport of chloride and sodium across an epithelium, leading to thick, sticky mucus.

Imagine if your body's internal pipes (like airways and ducts) were lined with thick peanut butter instead of water. This would make it hard for things to flow properly - this is similar to what happens in cystic fibrosis.
