The arctic tundra is a biome characterized by extremely cold temperatures, low biodiversity, long winters and short summers. It's found in the northernmost parts of North America, Europe, and Asia near the North Pole.
Imagine if your freezer was a world unto itself – that’s what life on the arctic tundra is like! It's incredibly cold with very little vegetation just like your freezer might be incredibly cold with only ice cubes inside!
Permafrost: A thick subsurface layer of soil that remains frozen throughout the year.
Biome: A large naturally occurring community occupying a major habitat e.g., forest or tundra.
Biodiversity: Variety within species, between species and ecosystems.
