Figure/ground relationship refers to how we perceive objects (figures) against their surrounding space (ground). The figure stands out from the ground due to contrasting characteristics.

Picture yourself looking at a silhouette against a bright sunset. The dark figure stands out distinctly from the colorful background, just like how figures in art stand out from their surrounding space.
